Vicky Vernon Hansen Smith was born May 21, 1952, in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She died July 5, 2018, also in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was the daughter of Art K. Vernon and Betty Ann Shelton.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Thad L. Hansen and daughter Cindy Long (Nathan).  Vicky is survived by her spouse, Don Carlos Smith; daughters: Anna Marie Dumas (Daniel), Veronica Hansen and Amy Hansen; sons: Von, Aaron (Sandra), Randy (Sandy), Andy, and Troy (Louise); brothers: Scott Kay Vernon (Shauna) and Brent Shelton Vernon (Tina); sisters: Janeida McCombs (Ramon) and Diane Gamble (Scott); 24 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.  Vicky was a wonderful mother and grandmother!  Her children and grandchildren meant everything to her.

Vicky was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She faithfully studied the scriptures daily.  She enjoyed serving in various callings throughout her life.  She and her husband, Don, served a mission together in the Salt Lake Temple.  She was keenly aware of her ancestors and loved family history.  She greatly anticipated her annual attendance at BYU Education Week.

Vicky graduated from Brighton High School in 1970 and was part of the first graduating class.  She then earned an early childhood degree from Southern Utah State College.  While she was there, she learned to love the Shakespearian Festival and returned frequently to enjoy the associated festivities.  She developed a strong work ethic at a young age as she worked for the family business, Art’s Milk Depot.  She ultimately retired from custodial work with the Jordan School District.

One of Vicky’s favorite past-times was getting together with family members. She enjoyed everything from simple family dinners to large family reunions.  Often family gatherings included playing games.  Some of her preferences were Pretty Kitty, Pitt, War, and Rummy.  A traditional family meal was lasagna, salad and garlic bread.  Her favorite treat was Aunt Connie’s Dessert.  She treasured family holiday traditions which included visits with grandparents and cousins, singing around the piano, gift giving, and homemade fruitcake and fudge.  She followed in her parents’ footsteps and became an avid square dancer.  She also loved music, especially singing and playing the piano.

In her spare time, Vicky loved to crochet.  She was very talented at crocheting everything from blankets and rugs to dolls.  She generously shared the things she made with others, never charging for her services.  She also became an expert at completing crossword puzzles.

Vicky will be greatly missed by her family and friends on earth, but we know she has now been joyously reunited with family members and others who anxiously greeted her on the other side of the veil.

Viewings will be held at Cannon Mortuary on Friday, July 13, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 14, 2018, from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.  A gathering will follow at the mortuary for family and friends.   The address is 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 South).  Internment at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
