Scott Benjamin Petersen

January 12, 1977 — August 17, 2024

Salt Lake City

Scott Benjamin Petersen, 47, passed away on August 17, 2024 after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Pete, as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was born on January 12, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Cecile Christensen and Scott Petersen. He was a happy soul and adventurous from the start.

Pete was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a baby and struggled with many complications from the disease throughout his life. He lost his eyesight and had a kidney/pancreas transplant. He endured many illnesses and procedures with courage. He was brave and always pushed forward despite his health setbacks. He fought the good fight.

He attended Brighton High School and Cottonwood High School and in 1995 completed his coursework on a sailboat in the Atlantic, somewhere between Rhode Island and Bermuda. He attended the University of Utah and graduated in 2009 with a degree in geography.

Pete was a great skier and loved spending time in the mountains and on the ocean. He was a people person and made friends everywhere he went. His favorite job was working as an assistant at a preschool for children with special needs. Pete was a loyal friend and a good listener. He was generous. He was a great uncle to Callie, Micah, and Kate and loved embarrassing them. He could tease like no one else. Pete always kept us laughing with his jokes. He loved tie-dyed tee shirts, diet Dr. Pepper, Bob Marley, Real Salt Lake, and Chelsea F C.

Pete was spiritual and had a deep relationship with his Heavenly Father. His faith gave him hope through many difficult times. He loved the Savior and we know he found great joy returning to Him. Pete taught us about humility and perseverance. He loved deeply. He was so grateful to his mother, Cecile, for the many years she lovingly cared for him.

We will truly miss him--his sense of humor, his big heart, and his words of encouragement. When you think of Pete, tell someone you love them and create a good day.

Pete is proceeded in death by his stepmother, Elizabeth Petersen, and his brother Lee Petersen.

He is survived by his parents, Cecile (Jay) Jensen and Scott (Judy Munz) Petersen; his sister, Lisa (Travis) Nielsen; his brother, Breck (Desiree) Petersen; his stepsisters Heather (Scott) Wayment, Nat (Brian) Young, Hilary (Jon) Hatch, and Trisha (Scott) Linford; and his 9 nieces and 11 nephews.

A visitation for friends and family will be held on Thursday, August 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 South) Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84121.
