Marjorie Hope Delong Newman
1932-2015
Marjorie died June 3 rd 2015 at IMC, Salt Lake County, as a result of a stroke. She was born August 16 th , 1932 to Jim Hope and Ruby Tingley Delong. She graduated from East High School in 1949 and graduated from the University of Utah in 1954 with a BS in Nursing. She married her sweet companion October 3 rd , 1953, James Calton Newman. They were later sealed in the LDS Temple. He preceded her in death May 5 th , 2007.
She worked at the Salt Lake County Hospital and on the perinatal unit at the University of Utah Medical Center for 32 years. She was a member of the Perinatal AIRMED team, transporting high-risk maternity patients in the intermountain west. She loved her profession and was creative, sensitive, and a calm and reassuring presence for families during their birthing experiences.
She enjoyed spending time with her nursing school friends, the “diva group”, the knitting group, Ruth Ann’s retreats, the Lions Rec. Center ladies, and her lovely neighbors. She was a loyal friend. Her social life excelled those of her children. She has touched countless lives with her many gestures of kindness and tireless service.
Left to mourn her death are her beloved four children: Ann, (Paul) Hawkins Spokane Washington. Their children are: Isaac(Emily) Hawkins, Emily (Nathan) Smith, Benjamin(Meredith)Hawkins, Elizabeth Hope (Brad) Ashby, Peter James (Mary) Hawkins, Paul Jr. (Melanie)Hawkins, Thomas Hawkins. Son David J. Newman Sandy, Utah. His sons are James and Michael Newman, daughters Caroline Newman Cottonwood Heights, Utah, and Joan (Jon) Gregory Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Their children are Joseph, Elder William (Charlotte, North Carolina Mission), Eliza, and Lydia Gregory.
Great grandchildren: Lucy, Jane, Henry, Elle, Truman, Clayton, Evelyn Ann, Aaron, Jonathon, David, Grace, and Charles.
One surviving sister Susan DeLong. Deceased brothers Richard T. DeLong and baby Tom R. DeLong.
Services will be held Saturday June 13 th , 2015 at 10:30 am at the LDS Holladay 8 th Ward Chapel, 5450 South Holladay Blvd. A viewing will begin at 9:15 am. Funeral services start at 10:30. Burial will follow, at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
