“Doc” Maitland G Spencer, M.D.
1930 - 2015
Maitland G Spencer M.D. affectionately known as “Doc” passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015. Born in Panguitch, Utah to Reta Alexander and Maitland Griffin Spencer on November 1, 1930. Maitland moved with his mother to Provo when he was 12 years old. He graduated from Provo High School with many friends who have remained close for 70 years. He met his eternal companion, Earlene Foote, on a double date and married her on September 13, 1950 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They have been married for 64 years. After graduating from BYU, Maitland attended the University of Maryland Medical School, graduating in 1957 as a Doctor of Medicine. He and Earlene settled in Cottonwood Heights where he began a 40 + year practice as a Family Practice Physician.
Maitland has many friends. He was known for his genuine love and kindness toward everyone. He is one to never miss an opportunity to tell his latest joke. His family remembers many Lake Powell trips with fondness and his desire to always be there for them.
He had a deep appreciation for music that he instilled in all his children. He loved all music from Spike Jones to classical, and everything in-between. He was a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for 20 wonderful years. Maitland and Earlene celebrated the millennium in Brazil while serving a mission for the LDS church as the Doctor to the Brazil Missionary Training Center. He served with his wife in the Salt Lake Temple for several years. He served in various other church callings but ward choir director was his favorite.
Maitland is survived by his wife Earlene and their children, Steven (Lorene), David (Lori), Kathy (Bob) Bartel, Lynn (Pamela), Rick (Suzanne), Julie (Rick) Brunson, and Michael (Tara), 31 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother Reta, grandson Keelan Pond and half brother Lael Spencer.
Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, February 11
th
, 11:00 a.m. at the Brighton 1st Ward, 2925 E. Bengal Blvd (7800 S.). A visitation will be held Tuesday, February 10
th
from 6-8 p.m. at Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E Bengal Blvd. (7600 S) and from 9:30–10:30 a.m. the day of the service at the church. Interment Mountain View Memorial Estates.
