Lucille Elizabeth Smith Gustafson, our loving mother and grandmother, age 82, passed away on October 2, 2024 in South Jordan, Utah of natural causes. She was born September 3, 1942 in Claresholm, Alberta, Canada to Raymond Emery Smith and Eliza Betty Woolford. She married Philip Ray Gustafson in the Salt Lake LDS temple on August 13, 1968. Philip, a member of the U.S. Airforce, passed away earlier this year on May 2, 2024. All who knew Lucille knew how much she loved and relied on Phil, and she missed him more than anything during the five months they were apart following his death.
Lucille’s family immigrated to the Salt Lake Valley in 1947 and she obtained full U.S. citizenship around 1970. She graduated from Granite High School in 1960. She worked as a secretary at C.H. Spencer and Company from her senior year of high school until the birth of her first child in 1970 and spent the rest of her life as a homemaker. Philip and Lucille owned and operated a family business, LCP Services (laminating, copying and printing) throughout the 80’s and 90’s. They also maintained a garden every year and were known for sharing the produce with their children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. Lucille canned, dried, and froze many fruits and vegetables from the garden.
She was an avid sewer, learned to design patterns, and undertook various projects ranging from clothing for her children, humanitarian work, Halloween costumes, and other outfits for special events for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, tatting, and baking and was well-known especially for her eclairs, pies, cinnamon rolls, and frosted cakes. She was also passionate about genealogy and temple work. She regularly attended the temple and frequently visited the family history library for genealogical research.
Lucille is survived by three children, Jody Rae Gustafson Robinson, Jeff Lynn (Kristine Pettey) Gustafson, and Jana Marie Gustafson; seven grandchildren, Melinda Robinson, Neal Robinson, Eric Bentley, Brittany (Adam) Llewellyn, Amber (Abel) Davalos, Gavin Gustafson, and Zackary Gustafson. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Philip.
