Linda Kiyoko Ushio Winward, died peacefully from a lingering illness surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Brent Collier Winward, on Saturday, May 25, 2013 due to complications of heart failure.

Linda was born in Salt Lake City September 10, 1945, the second child of Tadao and Ruby Akita Ushio. She was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 36 years in the Granite School District. She spent most of her career teaching first, second and third-graders at Fortuna and Woodstock Elementary Schools, touching the lives of many who learned in her classroom.

She graduated from West High School in Salt Lake and from the University of Utah where she earned Bachelor’s and Masters’ degrees in education.   Linda served as a member of a national Asian-American educators’ organization for several years, attending meetings in a number of cities across the nation. She enjoyed music, most particularly Jazz. Movies also were among her interests and Linda was an avid reader and puzzle- solver as well.

Brent was born in Vernal, Utah, October 13, 1940, the youngest of five siblings to Alfonzo and Mabel Collier Winward. He began his working life briefly as a Journeyman sheet metal worker and transitioned to the automobile industry, working various positions for the majority of his 33-year career at Laury and Mark Miller Pontiac, where he made lifelong customers and friends.

He enjoyed a host of interests including beekeeping, travel, and gun and coin collecting before and during retirement. Skiing was a sport in which he excelled, garnering him a position on the Utah Ski Patrol from 1965-68. Brent graduated from Vernal High School and Utah Technical College before enlisting for seven years in the Naval Reserves.

Brent and Linda met in the Salt Lake area, fell in love and were married for 35 years. In keeping with their wishes, a private service was held where they were laid to rest in Sandy City Cemetery.  They loved and cherished each other in life and to the hereafter.  Their keen sense of humor and loving hearts are already missed by their surviving family members.

Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Intermountain Medical Center, St. Marks Hospital, and many others for their care. Thank you also to the wonderful family, friends, and neighbors who reached out with their kind and timely visits, phone calls, and letters throughout Linda’s illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
