Lawrence M. Brooks
1949 - 2016
Lawrence M. Brooks (Larry) left us too soon due to the effects of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) on the morning of July 11, 2016, which happens to be the birthday of his sweetheart and loving eternal companion, Paula Kay Nichols Brooks. He was born in Memphis TN on September 17, 1949 to Roy Henry Brooks and Margaret Ruby Spencer. He had many fond memories of growing up "on Kingsbury".
He proudly served his country in the USAF during Vietnam. Upon returning, he finally convinced the 18 year old who had caught his eye 4 years earlier to be his wife and move to Provo and attend BYU. They were sealed in the Provo Temple July 1973. He graduated with an accounting degree and became a CPA.
Dad was the most honest person, whether it was telling you a truth that you needed to hear or returning extra change given to him by a cashier. There was no gray area with Dad. Right was right and wrong was wrong.
If you knew Dad, you were lucky enough to enjoy one of his famous "Larry's carrot cakes". He enjoyed baking and could be found most mornings about 4 a.m. in the kitchen making a treat to take to work.
The last part of his career was spent at ARUP Laboratories, where his love of hiking really took off. He will be a legend there, with a standing challenge to beat his time hiking to "the living room."
Dad was also proud of a few songs he wrote and was always positive he would get them published.
ALS took Dad's ability to bake and hike away in the last few years, but he would still give you a smile and tell you "I'm not doing too bad for an old guy with ALS" when asked how he was doing. We are comforted knowing he can now do the things he loved and we have him watching over us.
He is survived by our beautiful Mom, Paula, who lovingly cared for him the last four years.
Survived by wife, Paula, five daughters, Lauren (Troy), Melanie (Jeremy), Nicole, Melissa (Aaron), Lindsay (Spence) and one (favorite) son, Spencer, who shares his Dad's birthday. He was a proud Grandpa to 20 grandchildren. Brother, Ronnie (Donna); sisters, Sherrye (Earl) Donna (Jerry) and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, father and mother-in-law, Keith and Barbra Nichols. Preceded in death by parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset Hollow Ward, 3145 W. Mayflower Avenue, Lehi, Utah.
