On February 16, 2023, our loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Helen Vanderlinden, passed away peacefully in her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, to be reunited with her husband and three sons in the next life.  She was born on May 26, 1924 to Frank Allen Herridge and Ada Esther Catmull.  Her beloved mother became ill and passed away when she was just 13 years old, and Helen spent much of her childhood caring for her and her younger brother, Frank Herridge.  She married her high school sweetheart, Cornelius Vanderlinden, after graduation, and together, they raised four children. Cornelius “Corky” passed away on September 23rd, 2009, and Helen lived her remaining years in their home in East Millcreek, Utah.

Helen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she served faithfully in leadership and callings in every organization of the church throughout her life.  She spent many years volunteering at the Beehive House in downtown Salt Lake City, and loved sharing her testimony of the gospel with the people she met.  Her faith in God was strong, and brought her peace and strength during difficult times.  When she lost both of her sons within a period of three years, her valiant spirit and belief in forever families is what carried her through an extremely difficult period of life.

Helen was a happy person with a generous spirit.  She was skilled at sewing and crocheting, could play the piano by ear, loved to travel, and spend time in the beautiful Utah canyons, but above all, she enjoyed entertaining and being surrounded by the people she loved.  She had a tight-knit friend group, and they traveled together and met together regularly to play card games up until her final days.  She loved her cousins and extended family, and found great joy in family reunions, yearly vacations to Bear Lake, and working together at their chocolate store, Garden Gate Candy.  Above all else, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and created lifelong memories of innumerable holiday parties, family vacations, and “Sundays at Grandma’s”, where there were always ice cream treats in the freezer and cheese sandwiches made to order.

Helen is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Robert) Peterson and Connie (Richard) Plumb, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius “Corky” Vanderlinden, Steven Vanderlinden, Dennis (Patricia) Vanderlinden, and Ronald Vanderlinden, who passed away four days after birth.  She will be loved and missed by everyone who knew her.  The family would like to extend a special thank you to her wonderful caregivers, Polu, Lovey, Siosi, and Analeah, who provided the most loving and compassionate care during the last year of her life.

Funeral services will be held at the LDS chapel on 2000 E. 3900 S. on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 11:00 AM.  A viewing will be held prior to the funeral at 10:00 AM.
