GRANT EDWARD PEDLER

1922 – 2014

The world has lost one of the kindest, most caring people to walk on its surface.  Grant Edward Pedler, our dearest brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peaceably in his home in Cottonwood Heights to be reunited with his sweetheart Audrey.  He died of natural causes on April 21, 2014, living to the age of 91.   At the time of his passing he was surrounded by his loving family.

Grant was born on August 10, 1922 in Bountiful, Utah to William Joseph Pedler and Lily Violetta Cook.  He lived in Salt Lake City until the family moved in 1935 to their summer property, dubbed “Rocky Roost”, at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.  He graduated from Jordan High School in 1940.  He is a World War II veteran, having served in the Army Air Corp. in Fairbanks, Alaska and Great Falls, Montana.  He met his wife-to-be, Audrey Thompson, on a blind date before entering military service.  They were married on August 7, 1944 in the Logan Utah temple while Grant was on furlough.

In his professional life, Grant was known as a skilled cabinet maker and woodworker.  He loved woodworking and created many beautiful projects during his career and lifetime.  He often used the woodshop to teach many important life lessons, especially to his sons, all who had opportunities to work with him.  During those times, his “gentle means of sculpting souls” mirrored the skill and love he exhibited in his craft.

Grant was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held many callings.  He resided with his wife in the Cottonwood 3 ^rd Ward for 10 years and the Butler 1 ^st Ward for 58 years until the time of his passing.  While living in “Butlerville” he faithfully served as Bishop, Counselor, Ward Clerk, High Priest Group Leader, Young Men’s Advisor as well as many other callings.

Grant was a man of dignity and integrity.  He endured many years of pain and infirmity to stay with his sweetheart Audrey, serving her until her passing seven weeks ago.  His strength was apparent even at the end.

In addition to his loving wife of 69 years, Audrey, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers William, Earnest, Stanley and Milton; sisters Evelyn, Merle, Birdie and Lily; and grandson Mitchell Pedler.  He is survived by his sister Donna Mae Taylor; daughter JoAnn (Brent) Clayton; sons Ron (Jana), Dee (Charlotte), Scott (Rebecca), Daryl (Sherri) and Gary; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held for close friends and family at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah on Friday, April 25 at 12:00 Noon.
