Gordon Marriner Merrill “French” passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of Saturday, November 9th due to natural causes. He was 87.
Gordon was born in Salt Lake City Utah to Marriner Hendricks Merrill and Erika Beinert Merrill. His early years were spent growing up with his five beloved siblings Darlene, Sandra, Toni, Lynn and Lynda (deceased) in South Salt Lake. This was a special time in his life. Gordon attended South High School and at age 17 joined the Air Force where he was quickly recognized for his talent in boxing, winning base champion in the Welter-Weight class. Gordon was later diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and subsequently medically discharged from his service. Gordon’s strong work ethic led him on an adventurous career introducing him to various industries across several states in the west. Later in life, he married his sweetheart Dorothy Haskins. Together they enjoyed over 40 memorable years until her passing on February 2nd, 2013.
Gordon was an avid golfer and boasted 32 holes-in-one. He won many amateur golf tournaments and would donate his purse to charity and others in need. He enjoyed jazz and classical music and often attended the symphony with his wife, Dorothy. Gordon was a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
He was preceded in death by his sister Lynda Merrill and parents Marriner Hendricks Merrill and Erika Bienert Merrill.
Gordon is survived by his sons Richard (Lisa) Gatherum and Kriss Merrill; daughter Jill (Randy) Childs; siblings Darlene (Ken) Daily, Sandra Covey, Toni (Roger) Davis, and Lynn (Phyllis) Merrill. He was known as “Grampa French” by his 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
All are invited to attend the services for Gordon. Funeral: Saturday, November 16th at noon, viewing from 11:-11:45 am. Location at the Midvale East 1st Ward at 240 E Greenwood Circle (7570 S) Midvale, UT 84047
