George Blair Glade Jr. passed away peacefully at the end of the day on October 13, 2017 at the age of 92. He was a treasured man who was loved by all. George was born in Salt Lake City on January 5, 1925, the son of George Blair Glade Sr. and Velma Nuttall. After graduating from East High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II as a gunner corporal with the 186th Field Artillery Battalion. George joined in the Normandy D-Day invasion in June 1945 and fought in many of the major battles in Europe. V-E Day found him stationed in Czechoslovakia. His military service was distinguished with the award of a Bronze Star and provided a framework of service and commitment that inspired the rest of his life. He was honored last year in Washington D.C. as part of the KSL Honor Flight program.
George married Marie Madsen on June 14, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple, which marriage was filled with love and consideration. His care and devotion to her was never-ending until her death almost a year ago, particularly during the last several years of her life when she was in poor health. He was in love with Marie.
Following his military service, George attended the University of Utah and was part of the first graduating class from the School of Pharmacy. George had a lifetime career in retail pharmacy as the owner of Ericksons Pharmacy in Holladay and other related retail businesses. His profession, which made him part of the fabric of Holladay, brought him many wonderful associations and friendships.
George was a beloved member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his life reflected a deep testimony of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. He served in many Church positions including scout master, young men’s president and bishop of the Holladay 5th Ward (Olympus 1st Ward). His service reflected his thoughtful compassion and great care for others. Throughout his life he provided ongoing service to many in need – service that was unseen by the world. He was soft-spoken but had a strength and a resolve of goodness. He remained true to his heroes, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and President Heber J. Grant.
George was a University of Utah season football and basketball ticket-holder and enjoyed vegetable gardening, reading, camping and sports with the family. Above all, George’s commitment was to Marie and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who he loved very much. His mind was focused on the well-being of his family, and he was a sideline fixture at any game or event involving a child or grandchild.
George is survived by his children Larry (Patty), Julie Green (Ken), Susan Taylor (Scott), Kevin (Holly), Linda Layton, and Corey (Ruth Ann), together with 26 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear siblings Helen Fenton, Kathryn Goates, Barbara Palmer and Royden Glade. He is preceded in death by Marie, his parents and his brother Preston Glade.
