Gary Joseph Baum

August 19, 1946 — August 16, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Joseph Baum, who left us peacefully on August 16, 2024, just days before his 78th birthday. Born on August 19, 1946, Gary was a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many.

Gary is survived by his three daughters, Wendy (Ryan) Gibbons, Julie (Scott) Piotter, and Mindie (Scott) Gibbons, all from his first marriage to Colleen Nielson (Coon). From his second marriage to Robin Baum (Scribner), he gained two stepchildren, Dawn (Shawn) Johnstun and Nick (Katie) Carter, who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his brother, Dennis Baum.

Gary was a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren: Brandon (Emily), Tyler (Jill), Brooke (Trevor), Makenna, Kara (Gage), Brenden, Hannah, Cali, Sidney, Max, Lily, Tesha (Mario), Shelby (Giannina), Ashley (Dillon), Nicole, and Marnie. His legacy extends to 11 great-grandchildren: Mia, Reddik, Teddy, Jack, Sloan, Josie, Penny, Everett, Gabriel, Wyatt, and Sky.

Gary had a passion for life and found joy in many activities. He was a lifelong entrepreneur, always exploring new ventures and ideas with a spirit of determination and creativity. His adventurous nature meant that he was never content to stay in one place for too long, constantly seeking new experiences and challenges.

Music was a significant part of Gary's life, especially 70's country music, which he loved and played often. The melodies and lyrics of his favorite songs provided him with comfort and joy throughout his life.

Gary loved coaching little league football, he cherished time spent traveling, boating and fishing.

A lifelong sports fan, Gary was a devoted supporter of the University of Utah football team, never missing an opportunity to cheer on the Utes.

In his late 50s, Gary suffered a massive stroke, but through his determination and with the support of his then-wife Robin, he remained independent for over 15 years. It was only after the effects of COVID-19 in 2020 that he needed to transition to an assisted living facility. Despite this change, Gary’s spirit remained strong, and he formed close bonds with the rising generation and with the care givers and friends at the center, who brought him joy and companionship during his time there.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held graveside at Larkin Sunset Cemetery in Sandy Utah on August 24th at 2:30 PM
