Garth Owen Van Tassell, age 93, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, at his daughter’s home in Beryl, Utah. Born in Bingham Canyon, Utah, to Clifford and Minnie (Sabey) Van Tassell, Dad had one brother, Wayne. He married Mary LaVon Nyberg on December 21, 1949, in Mountain Home, Utah, and together they nurtured a loving family of six children: Mike, Gary, Brad, Elaine, Connie, and Todd.
Dad's early years were marked by frequent moves, but his heart found a home in Tabiona, Utah, where he thrived. A proud graduate of Tabiona High School, Dad was not only a talented basketball player but also a devoted fan. He cherished the memories of the games and often traveled great distances to support his team. Dad’s passion for boxing flourished during this time as well, training under the champion Gene Fulmer and participating in several bouts. He often joked that he retired from boxing after realizing he could defeat Gene, though it is believed he simply lost the desire to continue.
In South Jordan, Garth and LaVon ran a successful dairy farm, later relocating to Clifton, Idaho, where they established a new dairy. Garth's entrepreneurial spirit led him and his brother-in-law Pete Nyberg to create the first hay cubing business in Southern Utah. Throughout his varied career, which included roles at Western Union, truck driving, and building management, Garth’s greatest joy came from spending summers with his grandchildren. He made sure that there was always a pool for family gatherings, creating cherished memories that will live on in their hearts. Above all, his love for LaVon and their children was paramount, and he worked tirelessly to provide for his family.
After the passing of LaVon in 2010, Dad married Judith Foster, later divorced. Dad found love again with Betty Jimenez, relocating to Milford Utah, where he formed many lasting friendships. After a fall on her Birthday in April, Betty passed away in May of 2024.
A proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dad was known for his strong principles and practical advice, famously reminding family and friends to “Make sure you have your food storage!” His foresight and preparation for the future were a testament to his character.
Dad is survived by his sons Michael Lee (Debra) of Cottonwood Heights, Gary Lynn (Norma) of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Todd Owen of St. George. He is also survived by his daughter Elaine Schriver (Tony), who is deceased. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife LaVon, son Bradley, daughter Connie, and son-in-law Anthony Schriver. He is also preceded in death by his cherished grandchildren, including Allyson Jensen, Kelcie Dawn Adams, and Danny Van Tassell.
Garth Owen VanTassell lived a life full of love, hard work, and dedication to his family. He will be profoundly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
