Elizabeth (“Betty”) Sloan Ellison
1941 - 2016
Elizabeth (“Betty”) Sloan Ellison, 75, passed away at her home on July 19, 2016 of natural causes. Betty was born January 29, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Robert C. and Laura E. Sloan.
Betty was raised on the Avenues of Salt Lake City, where she loved to play with her older brother, friends and dogs. She graduated from East High School in 1959 and earned a degree in History from the University of Utah in 1963, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
Betty married Peter K. Ellison in 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple and had five children, who they raised in the Cottonwood Heights area. She was completely devoted to her family and dedicated all of her time and efforts in ensuring everyone’s happiness and wellbeing, including driving countless miles and spending hours upon hours watching her children and grandchildren perform and compete in their many activities. Betty was deeply involved in her children’s lives and was always very interested in getting to know their friends well. She was always willing to listen to everyone and enjoyed having her children’s friends gather in her home, and they loved her dearly as a result.
She had an adventurous streak and traveled around the world with her husband. Betty always had her sights set on something she wanted to do and was always proud of the fun and interesting activities she participated in, such as riding in hot air balloons and helicopters, parasailing, zip lining and riding on a Zamboni at a hockey game. Betty especially loved to travel with her family. She relished it so much that she once took all of her children and grandchildren on a cruise around the Bahamas. Nothing made Betty happier than seeing her family bond and have a good time together.
Betty was very talented in many areas. She learned to play the piano at a young age and enjoyed playing it throughout her life. She loved to sing and was a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from 1967 to 1970. Betty was a talented seamstress and was always willing to mend clothing, sew new pieces of clothing, costumes, wedding dresses, or anything else somebody could imagine. She loved to work in the garden and could be regularly found weeding and planting with Jackson, her loyal companion and family dog, by her side.
Betty served in many callings in the LDS Church throughout her life and touched many lives in the process. She spent many years in the Primary, Young Women and the Relief Society. Perhaps her favorite calling of all was ward organist.
Betty is survived by her beloved husband, Peter K. Ellison and five children: Ann (Travis) Manning; Becky (Jared) Hansen; Karen (Bill) Whitaker; Dan (Elizabeth); and David. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert C. Sloan Jr.
