It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Donald David Colman, on November 25th at the age of 91. He passed peacefully in his home with his family present.
Don was born on August 29, 1933 in Salt Lake City to Eaton David and Violet Mae Colman. Don was married to Marian R. Graham on September 29, 1963, in Price, Utah. Marian passed away February 24, 2023.
After graduating from West High School Don worked at Hill Air Force base before being drafted into the army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955. After the army he attended Westminster College and worked for Montgomery Ward, in Salt Lake, Casper, Cheyenne and Grand Junction, until returning to Salt Lake to work for the U.S. Postal Service. He started as a letter carrier, progressing into management where he managed the automated mail processing, various mail stations and served as the employment officer, as well as postmaster in several locations. After retirement in 1992 he worked at Weight Watchers and Brasher’s Auto Auction to support his hobbies.
Don was a true renaissance man, an accomplished artist, musician, sailor, car restorer, boat builder and race car driver. He held leadership positions in the Bonneville Austin Healy Club, Intermountain Vintage Racing Association, the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club, a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and active in the Wasatch Mountain Club. He also was a ski instructor at Brighton.
In the last few years as some of his more strenuous activities scaled back, Don rediscovered his passion for art. He produced numerous paintings and drawings using various medias. A first prize at the Utah State fair was one of his accomplishments.
He was a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and brother. He is survived by his brother Brian (Ann) of Berthod, CO, daughter Allison of White Horse, Yukon, Canada, Mike of Heber City, UT and Steve (Karen) of Centennial, CO. grand children Kyle (Christina) of Highlands Ranch, CO, Melanie (Mark) of Richmond VA, great grandchildren Heidi and Ellen.
