Dale was born June 12, 1926 to Griff J. and Virginia Stringham Howells in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the first of two children. He grew up in South Salt Lake City and graduated from Granite High School. He liked sports and played football.
He served in the United States Navy for three years during World War II. He was aboard the USS Concord during the occupation of Japan. The ship shot the last Navy salvo of the war against the Japanese. After the war, he went to West High School where he learned the printing trade. He worked at Ritz Printing and Paragon Printing in Salt Lake City for thirteen years. He then worked at BYU Printing in Provo for twenty-eight years. He was a very hard worker and became a skilled pressman, a supervisor, and a good press repairman. He retired from BYU in 1989.
Dale married Lois Mae Davidson, the love of his life, on October 8, 1949, in Lyman, Wyoming. They had seven children who were the light of their lives. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Dale loved horses. He was a farm boy at heart! He had horses since 1955 when he purchased the property to keep them on. He enjoyed teaching his children to ride. He provided horses for them to be in 4-H riding clubs, parades, and horse shows. He was proud of all of their accomplishments. Dale enjoyed taking the family and their horses to help with the cattle round ups at the Cottonwood Stake Ranch each year. They did this for almost thirty years.
He was the watermaster for the Brown and Sanford Irrigation Company for several years. He was also a councilman for the Cottonwood Community Council.
He loved being outdoors, spending time with his family and serving his friends and neighbors. He was always lending a helping hand.
Dale and Lois loved to travel. After their retirement in 1989, they spent twenty years of winters in Yuma, Arizona as trailer snowbirds with many of their dear friends. Later, they spent the winters in St. George at the Temple View Trailer Park. They made many more dear friends there.
They enjoyed part of their summers at their home in Paradise, Utah. Family gatherings there were a special treat for Dale. He liked being with his family in both work and play.
Dale is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Cheryl (Don), Janice, Valene, James (Judy), Vaughn (Lori), Jay and Chris. Eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, one niece and one nephew. Preceded in death by his wife, Lois, his parents, sister Joyce, brother-in-law Ken Barber, and his nephew Doug Barber.
Funeral services will be held on March 23, 2024, at 11:00a at the Cottonwood 8th ward located at 6301 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84121. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 9:30a to 10:45a. On Friday, March 22nd there will be a viewing at the same location from 6:00p-8:00p.
Internment services will be on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 2:30p at the Paradise City Cemetery, Paradise, Utah.
