Betty Ann Shelton Vernon Giles

January 1, 1932 – November 18, 2014

Hurricane, Utah

Betty Ann Shelton Vernon Giles passed away November 18, 2014.  She was born in Blair, Nebraska on January 1, 1932 to Ralph LaMar Shelton and Ida Leone Brough.  She cherished the relationship she had with her only brother, Ralph LaMar Shelton, Jr.  As a child and throughout life, Betty Ann enjoyed singing, playing the piano, and acting which were traits she felt were inherited from her mother.  At the age of 12 her family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.  She graduated from East High School in 1949.  Betty Ann met and fell in love with her eternal sweetheart, Art K. Vernon, on a blind date.  They were married in 1950.  As a couple they were avid and accomplished square dancers.  They had five delightful children and Betty Ann was a wonderful mother!  Betty Ann loved playing Bridge and other card games with family and friends.  She also loved Betty Grable and Alice Faye movies.  She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was an ordinance worker in the Provo, Utah Temple.  She also served as a local missionary in the Missionary Training Center. Betty Ann worked in many government positions culminating her career as the secretary to the Senior Army Adviser and Post Commander at Fort Douglas.  Betty Ann moved to Hurricane, Utah in 2013 to be near her daughter, Jan, and spent the remainder of her life there.  With Jan, Betty enjoyed singing her favorite songs and playing their favorite duet together on the piano each day. She was visited frequently by her other children who also cherished these musical experiences. Each felt music with their mother fostered memories of their childhood.

Betty Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Art K. Vernon.  Betty Ann is survived by her brother Ralph LaMar Shelton, Jr.;  sons Scott (Shauna) and Brent (Tina); and daughters Vicky Smith (Don), Janeida McCombs (Ramon), and Diane Gamble (Scott); 21 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 S.), Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
