Betty Ruth Stevenson Allen passed away January 31, 2014.  She was born in Salt Lake City on February 25, 1923 to Dr. Lester A. Stevenson and Bertha Starley Stevenson.

She attended Salt Lake City public schools and graduated from East High. Betty then attended the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, with a diploma in Medical
Technology.  After graduating, she worked as a medical technologist in Utah, Pennsylvania and Mississippi.

She returned to Salt Lake to raise her two sons. She was active in community and church service. She served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She had a lifelong love for flowers and was a founding member of the Artistic Designers Garden Club and an Accredited Flower Show Judge.

She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions including stake and ward Relief Society positions. For many years she was ward organist. She served on several general church committees and helped to write the Family Home Evening Manual and the Young Women’s Manual. She wrote the music for a play produced at Promised Valley Playhouse. She also wrote the music for a collection of children’s songs.

Betty is survived by her sons, Samuel (Virginia), of Moab, UT, John (JoAnn),of Cottonwood Heights, UT; six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Samuel M. Allen; sisters, Maurine S. Holt, Elaine S. Evans, Ester S. Snedden; her brothers, Vernon, Elbert, Claudius, Ronald, and Victor.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Avenue “N” Street.  A visitation will be held prior to service at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 S.) from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
